New Interim Management in Place for CMS

Elizabeth Maruma Mrema has been appointed Officer in Charge of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) by Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) as of 27 July 2009. In addition, Mr. Steiner has appointed Bert Lenten, the current Executive Secretary of the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) Secretariat as Acting Deputy Executive Secretary of CMS, effective as of 2 July 2009. Lesser White-fronted Goose conservation in Fennoscandia - 2nd Meeting of RECAP Committee at Nordens Ark, Sweden

The Committee for Captive Breeding, Reintroduction and Supplementation of Lesser White-fronted Geese in Fennoscandia (RECAP) held its second meeting in Sweden on the 7th and 8th of September at Nordens Ark, 120 km north of Gothenburg. The atmosphere at the meeting was very constructive and all of the main objectives set out for the meeting were achieved. Overall the Nordic countries are increasingly moving towards a closer cooperation concerning the captive breeding of Lesser White-fronted Geese. [read on]

Texel Workshop for the Slender-billed Curlew

As part of the annual International Wader Study Group conference, the Slender-billed Curlew Working Group organised a one day workshop on the Dutch island of Texel on the 21 September 2009. The main objectives were to discuss and improve several protocols drafted to guide the search and subsequent conservation action for the Slender-billed Curlew, of which there have been no verified records for about a decade. WetCap project activities get off the ground!

Activities scheduled to be carried out during the first year of the 3-year project on “Strengthening waterbird and wetland conservation capacities in North Africa (WetCap)” are well underway. Launched in March 2009 the 1.6 million euro WetCap project aims to strengthen the capacities for waterbird and wetland conservation in Algeria, Egypt, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia. Linked to the ongoing UNEP-GEF African-Eurasian Flyways Project named “Wings over Wetlands” (WOW), this project significantly contributes to the implementation and longevity of WOW with a focus on the North African region. AEWA takes part in the biggest worldwide birdwatching fair

The biggest birdwatching event in the world, the "British Birdwatching Fair", opened its doors on Friday, 21 August 2009 at the Rutland Water Nature Reserve, near Oakham, England. This year there were over 300 different organisations and companies exhibiting – a truly international gathering representing bird and wildlife interest from almost every corner of the globe. Under the exhibitors, inter alia, BirdLife International, RSPB, Leica, Canon, Naturetrek and many others. This year, AEWA was present at this event for the first time. [read on]

Book launch: Living on the edge - Wetlands and birds in a changing Sahel

The world habitats are changing and the Sahel region is no exception. Affected by climate change and other rapid man-made habitat changes related to deforestation, irrigation and reclamation of wetlands, the Sahel is changing its face. For long-distance migratory birds, the Sahel is a very important wintering area and the transformation of the region will also have a strong influence on migratory bird populations that depend on it. In Focus: AEWA Conservation Guideline No. 5 - Guidelines on sustainable harvest of migratory waterbirds

If populations of migratory waterbirds are to be maintained in a favourable conservation status, it is essential that any exploitation of these populations be carried out on a sustainable basis. Article III, paragraph 2 (b) of the Agreement requires that Parties ensure that any use of migratory waterbirds is based on an assessment of the best available knowledge of their ecology, and is sustainable for the species as well as for the ecological systems that support them.
