Restoring Wetlands Critical for Waterbirds: The Lake Tanganyika Basin Biodiversity Project

As the world rallies behind the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, collaborative efforts are underway to safeguard and rehabilitate some of Africa’s most critical transboundary wetland habitats. “Wetlands are the lifeblood of biodiversity. They play a crucial role in supporting ecosystems, mitigating climate change, and are critical for migratory waterbirds – as resting, refuelling, breeding, nesting and feeding grounds,” says Jacques Trouvilliez, Executive Secretary of the African Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (AEWA).

AEWA Technical Committee Advances Preparations for MOP9 at its 20th Meeting in Mikulov

The 20th Meeting of the AEWA Technical Committee (TC20) successfully convened in the picturesque town of Mikulov, Czech Republic, from 24-28 February 2025. Hosted by the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic and co-funded by the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the four-day meeting brought together experts and policy makers from across Africa and Eurasia. Participants of the meeting included regional representatives, experts from a wide spectrum of fields as well as Party Observers and several key implementing partner organizations of the Agreement.

Marking the Loss of the Slender-billed Curlew: A Wake-Up Call for Conservation

Mikulov/Bonn 25 February 2025 – Today marks the solemn 30 year anniversary of the last indisputable sighting of the Slender-billed Curlew (Numenius tenuirostris), at Merja Zerga, Morocco, on 25 February 1995. Now considered extinct, this tragic loss stands as the first recorded extinction of a bird since records began from mainland Europe, North Africa, Central and West Asia.

Celebrating 30 Years of AEWA: A Milestone for Flyway Conservation

2025 marks the 30th Anniversary of the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), the unique international treaty dedicated to the conservation of migratory waterbirds and their habitats across Africa, Europe, and parts of Asia. Since it was negotiated and concluded on 16 June 1995, in The Hague, the Netherlands, AEWA has played a crucial role in fostering international cooperation and conservation action for 255 migratory waterbird species across the African-Eurasian Flyways.

The reports are part of a triennial update on global freshwater quality and management and track the progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal #6: Ensure access to water and sanitation for all.

The partners behind World Migratory Bird Day are happy to announce that the theme for the 2025 campaign will be dedicated to creating bird-friendly cities and communities. Next year's campaign will highlight the need for a healthy coexistence between humans and birds. It will focus on creating and adapting environments that support migratory bird populations across all communities, from bustling cities to smaller towns and communities. There are actions everyone can take to protect our shared spaces with wildlife.

EGM IWG9: Annual Meeting Sets New Goals for Goose Management in Europe

The 9th annual meeting of the European Goose Management International Working Group (EGM IWG9) successfully concluded in Tromsø, Norway on Thursday, 20 June 2024. Hosted by the Norwegian Environment Agency and chaired by Prof. Petter Kjellander from Sweden, the event brought together national government representatives, experts and key stakeholders.

AEWA Technical Committee Convenes to Review Progress in Work Plan Implementation

The 19th Meeting of the AEWA Technical Committee (TC19) was successfully held as a virtual event on 12 – 14 March 2024. The three-day meeting brought together a total of 62 participants from across Africa and Eurasia, including regional representatives, experts from a wide spectrum of fields as well as 16 Party Observers and several key implementing partner organizations of the Agreement.
