The Regional Coordinator for the WetCap project has been appointed

Mr. Sidi Imad Cherkaoui The AEWA Secretariat is pleased to announce that Mr. Sidi Imad Cherkaoui has entered on duty as Regional Coordinator for the 3-year project on “Strengthening waterbird and wetland conservation capacities in North Africa (WetCap)” as of 15 June 2009.

The WetCap project, which was developed under the umbrella of AEWA, in cooperation with its project partners SEO/BirdLife, BirdLife International, Wetlands International and the Ramsar Convention, is closely linked to the ongoing Wings over Wetlands UNEP-GEF African-Eurasian Flyway Project WOW. Within the framework of the WetCap project, capacity building activities will be implemented in Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt and Mauritania.

SEO/BirdLife, which runs the BirdLife International Country Programme in Morocco, was closely involved in the development of the WetCap project and will provide the coordination of regional activities under the WetCap project. The project is sponsored by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).

The WetCap project countriesSidi Imad Cherkaoui is a Moroccan ornithologist with a PhD in ornithology and ecology of birds. In the past he has worked for SEO/BirdLife in the framework of a LIFE Wetlands project in Morocco and as Coordinator of the WWF Freshwater Programme in Morocco. As Representative of SEO/BirdLife in Morocco and Regional Coordinator for the WetCap project, Imad is based at the Wetlands Centre in Rabat, Morocco which was established by SEO/BirdLife under the LIFE Wetlands project. Imad is fluent in French, English and Arabic and has a good understanding of Spanish.

The AEWA Secretariat is looking forward to working with him in the framework of the WetCap project!
