The
Ramsar
Convention on Wetlands celebrated the 11th
World Wetlands Day (WWD) around the world on 2 February
2008. Taking into account the close relationship between
the Ramsar Convention and the Agreement on the conservation
of African-Eurasian migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) the AEWA
Secretariat supported the event by encouraging participation
in this celebration around the World.
The global campaign aims to raise awareness
on the importance of wetlands as vital ecosystems and the
benefits they provide, such as fresh water supply, maintenance
of biodiversity, flood control and others. Government agencies,
non-governmental organizations, and groups of citizens at
all levels of the community were encouraged to participate
in this year’s World Wetlands Day.
The Ramsar Convention, with the support
of the Danone Group, has produced materials helping to plan
awareness activities such as posters, stickers and information
sheets (etc.).
