To
avoid further electrocution of thousands of birds, the Hungarian
Ornithological and Nature Conservation Society (MME) signed
a new “Accessible sky” agreement together with
the Ministry
of Environment and Water (MEW) and major electric
companies in Hungary. The agreement is a voluntary commitment,
forming the basis of a long-term solution until 2020 aiming
to address the problem of bird electrocution in Hungary.
The electric companies involved promised
a “bird-friendly” transformation of all dangerous
power lines in Hungary and agreed to only use “bird-friendly”
methods in managing newly constructed power lines.
Electrocution and the collision with electric
power lines have caused the death of thousands of birds
in Hungary and other European countries. Surveys, commissioned
by MME revealed that annually an estimated 30,000 birds
are killed in Hungary alone. Amongst these birds are vulnerable
species like the Great Bustard and other migratory bird
species such as cranes and geese.
