Bonn,
2 October 2007 - The 12 nominees of the 2007 World
Migratory Bird Day Drawing Competition have now been selected.
During the course of summer this year, the AEWA Secretariat
received 157 drawings from children from all over the world,
who took part in the Drawing
Competition. The children up to the age of
16 years were requested to portray their thoughts on this
year's WMBD theme “migratory birds in a changing climate”
and to express their fears and visions on paper.
The organisers of the WMBD Painting Competition
where overwhelmed by the amazing creativity and the number
of masterpieces which were received from Hong Kong (SAR
of China), Romania, Germany, Iran, India, Cuba, the United
States, France, Canada, Tunisia, China, Singapore, the Philippines
and Norway.
In order to ensure a fair selection process,
the organisers divided the drawings into three age groups:
from 5-8 years, 9-12 years and 13-16 years.
The selection of the nominees was carried
out by a large number of CMS and AEWA Staff members, which
were asked to indicate their favourite drawings in each
category. Based on the results of this survey, the four
best drawings were selected in each category. The resulting
twelve drawings are now nominated for a prize and later
this year a final decision will be taken on the first/ second
and third prize winner.

We wish to congratulate all the nominees
and thank all participants for their wonderful works of
art and contributions to the 2007 WMBD Painting Competition.
We are currently in the process of developing an online
gallery of all submitted paintings and (funds
permitting) also plan to produce a dedicated calendar, which
will help highlight the wonderful artwork we received. We
hope that both the online presentation and the dedicated
calendar will help to further convey the sense of urgency
we found reflected in all these wonderful paintings.
World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) was initiated
by AEWA and the Convention on Migratory Species (UNEP/CMS)
in 2006 to raise awareness on the need to protect migratory
birds and their habitats, and to inspire people to take
action.
The Convention on Migratory Species (CMS)
and the African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) are
two international treaties dedicated to the conservation
of wildlife, administered by the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP).
