AEWA Small Grants Fund Programme

Bonn, 30 August 2013 - The UNEP/AEWA Secretariat is currently inviting project proposals from eligible African countries for the 2013 cycle of the AEWA Small Grants Fund (SGF). The deadline for submission of project proposals is 30 November 2013. Detailed information on the AEWA Small Grants Fund, including the Operational Guidelines and application forms is available below.

Eligibility

Applications from eligible African countries can be submitted by national government institutions and non-governmental organisations concerned with the conservation of migratory waterbirds and their habitats.

Project proposals from African AEWA Contracting Parties should clearly contribute to the implementation of AEWA and its Strategic Plan 2009-2017, including the activities highlighted by the AEWA Plan of Action for Africa 2012-2017. The maximum grant amount per project is 20,000 Euros and the maximum project duration is 24 months.

Eligible African non-Contracting Parties can apply for a grant of up to 10,000 Euros to support activities aimed at completing their accession to AEWA, for instance information and awareness-raising workshops on AEWA accession. Higher priority will, however, be given to proposals from Contracting Parties.

Advisory services

Project applicants who require advice on the preparation of their project proposal should contact the UNEP/AEWA Secretariat as soon as possible, and no later than 30 October 2013.

How to apply

Project proposals must be submitted using the application form provided. The submission deadline is 30 November 2013. All project proposals must be endorsed by the AEWA National Focal Point (or AEWA Contact Person in the case of non-Contracting Parties), using the endorsement form provided which must be signed and stamped. Applicants may, in addition, provide further documentation supporting their suitability to implement the proposed project. The completed and signed application and endorsement forms, as well as supporting documentation, must be submitted to the UNEP/AEWA Secretariat at:

The AEWA Small Grants Funds – Background and Past Project Cycles

The AEWA Small Grants Fund initially established through Resolution 1.7 of the 1st Meeting of the Parties to AEWA (MOP1), aims at promoting and supporting the implementation of AEWA in developing countries and countries with economies in transition. Since its launch, the Fund has benefited both governmental and non-governmental organizations carrying out a wide range of conservation activities. It has so far focused exclusively on the African region.

This important AEWA support scheme became operational in 2010, after the 4th Meeting of the AEWA Parties (MOP4) had decided to make available an annual sum of 20,000 Euros from the AEWA core budget for SGF projects in Africa. These funds were complemented by voluntary contributions from the Governments of France, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Overall, five projects for a total of 93,071 Euros were funded under the first cycle of the Small Grants Fund. In addition to two successfully completed projects from this first cycle, activities are still ongoing in Egypt, Ethiopia and Gambia for the 2010 project cycle. Two projects from Tanzania and Ghana, funded for a total amount of 43,367 Euros under the 2011 cycle of the AEWA SGF are also currently being carried out. The implementation of two projects in Senegal and Uganda, funded for a total of 45,382 Euros, recently kicked off in the framework of the 2012 cycle of the AEWA SGF.

Diverse types of projects can benefit from SGF funding. These include, for example, activities related to species and habitat conservation, survey and monitoring of species and sites, provision of necessary optical and other equipment to support such activities, training and awareness-raising for different target groups and livelihood related activities such as promoting alternative income generating activities including ecotourism. The CMS Small Grants Programme

AEWA’s mother convention, the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), will shortly launch a call for proposals for its Small Grants Programme (SGP). The SGP aims to facilitate the implementation of CMS at the grass-roots level, particularly in developing countries. Thanks to a voluntary contribution from UNEP, a total of 300,000 USD were made available for the period 2012-2014 for CMS SGP projects. Governmental institutions, non-governmental organizations, communities, conservationists and researchers engaged in the conservation of migratory species in Contracting Parties to CMS, may submit proposals. Further information on the eligibility criteria for the CMS SGP can be found on the SGP website.
