2025/004: Hosting the 10th Session of the Meeting of the Parties (MOP10) to AEWA (Scheduled for 2028)

The UNEP/AEWA Secretariat would herewith like to invite all Contracting Parties to the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) to consider hosting the 10th Session of the Meeting of the Parties (MOP10), which is scheduled to take place in 2028.

The Meeting of the Parties is the principal decision-making body of the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), with ordinary sessions taking place at intervals of not more than three years. Previous sessions of the MOP were held in Hungary, South Africa, France, Madagascar, Senegal and Germany. At MOP10 the new AEWA Strategic Plan 2029-2037 will be presented for discussion and approval.

No offer from a Party to host MOP10 has been received to date.

The decision on the host of MOP10 will be taken at the forthcoming 9th Session of the Meeting of the Parties (MOP9), which is scheduled to take place on 10-14 November 2025 in Gaborone at the kind invitation of the Government of Botswana, if one or more offers will have been received. Hosting this important meeting provides an opportunity to raise the profile of the host government and its conservation efforts and to generate additional interest and engagement. The host of the next Session of the Meeting of the Parties will also be a member of the Standing Committee of the Agreement for the period until the closure of the MOP session it is hosting, i.e. from 2026 to 2028.

Please contact the Secretariat at [email protected], if you are considering hosting MOP10 and wish to receive a detailed list of host country responsibilities.
