UNEA Event Spotlights Wildlife-friendly Energy Deployment

The CMS Family and BirdLife International are joining forces at the forthcoming Second Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) to raise awareness of guidelines devised to ensure that renewable energy installations are deployed in ways that have no adverse impact on migratory species such as birds and bats.

EU LIFE+ Project for Globally Threatened Lesser White-fronted Goose Wins European Natura 2000 Award

The EU LIFE+ project “Safeguarding the Lesser White-fronted Goose along its European Flyways” (LIFE10NAT/GR/638) is amongst this year’s winners of the European Natura 2000 Award, which were announced on the 23rd of May in Brussels during an evening awards ceremony hosted by the European Commission. The project came first in the category “Cross-border cooperation and Networking”.

Next Steps Agreed for the Establishment of a European Goose Management Platform under AEWA

Range states and key stakeholders came together in Paris on the 11-12 May to agree on the modalities for establishing a European Goose Management Platform under AEWA. The meeting was hosted and organized by the French Ministry of the Environment, Energy and the Sea as well as OMPO in Paris and represents a major turning point in the way AEWA Range States manage their shared migratory waterbirds.

AEWA Grant to Support WMBD 2016 Celebrations in Africa

The World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) campaign is recognized and promoted as an effective means for increasing understanding of and raising awareness on the need for conserving migratory birds, including in the African region. The AEWA Plan of Action for Africa therefore promotes the annual celebration of WMBD in each AEWA African Contracting Party through the provision of seed-funding to support the organization of national events, as well through the organization of a major sub-regional WMBD event each year.

AEWA Lesser White-fronted Goose Working Group Meets in Trondheim

The AEWA Lesser White-fronted Goose International Working Group came together in Trondheim, Norway for its third face-to-face meeting this week (12-14 April) hosted by the Norwegian Environment Agency at their premises. The meeting kicked off with an update on the current global status of the species presented by the Norwegian Ornithological Society (BirdLife Norway). Following a decision of the Working Group at its last meeting in 2012 to incorporate the eastern main population of the species - which occurs in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway - into the established international conservation framework under AEWA, detailed updates on the species were also presented for the first time in this forum by China and Japan.

World Migratory Bird Day – Benefit Concert at Bonn University

For the fourth consecutive year the operatic choir, Chorale Lirica San Rocco from Bologna, Italy will be giving a benefit concert in Bonn, as part of the annual celebration of World Migratory Bird Day. The proceeds from the concert will be donated to a project related to bird conservation. The concert entitled “Flight through a Decade” includes a programme of ten arias taken from major works each set in a different country, mirroring the various States that birds pass through on their annual migration.

Accession of Belarus Brings AEWA Membership to 76

Belarus has completed its accession process and deposited its instrument of accession with Agreement’s depositary, the Government of the Netherlands. Belarus will therefore become AEWA’s 76th Party on 1 April. Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe and has borders with the Russian Federation, Latvia. Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine.

the website for the 2016 World Migratory Bird Day is now online and organizers are invited to register their events. The design of this year’s poster (see below) has also been finalized and print copies will be available along with other promotional materials such as postcards and stickers.
