Ms. Inger Andersen, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme
For three decades, the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) has worked hard to safeguard these amazing birds that journey from the Arctic to southern Africa and back again. From the White Stork to the African Penguin, waterbirds connect us across borders and skies, and their wellbeing is an important indicator of the health of our ecosystems.
During this 30th anniversary year, we celebrate AEWA’s work across 119 countries that has delivered coordinated, united action on regional conservation efforts that are protecting African-Eurasian migratory routes and much needed habitats.
As we look ahead to the next 30 years, we must continue our shared responsibility to do all we can to protect these magnificent birds and all they do for people and planet.
