30 Years of AEWA – Statement by Mr. Stathis Stathopoulos, Secretary General for Forests, Ministry of Environment and Energy, Greece

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) and on behalf of the Hellenic Republic, we would like to express our appreciation for the important work carried out by the Agreement on the protection and conservation of migratory waterbirds and its role in coordinating different countries for the implementation of a common strategic framework for the protection of migratory routes.

Greece participates as an active member of the AEWA family after the ratification of the Agreement in its national law on 1 June 2023 and has undertaken important work due to the migratory bird species such as Dalmatian Pelican and Lesser White-fronted Goose that the country hosts and the important habitats it has.

Exploiting the potential of international cooperation provided by coordinated and appropriate measures, access to international know-how, alignment with international policies and guidelines for the management of biodiversity and aquatic habitats reinforces the country's commitment to strengthen the conservation status of migratory waterbirds that extends beyond national borders.

We warmly congratulate all those involved in the implementation of the objectives of the Agreement and wish good luck to our common goals.
