Mr. Sebastian Winkler, Director General, International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC)
The International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC) proudly joins in celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA). As one of the few organisations with permanent observer status on the AEWA Technical Committee, we are honoured to have supported this vital initiative from its earliest days.
For three decades, AEWA has advanced the sustainable use of migratory waterbirds, recognising the essential role that hunters, land managers, and local communities play in restoring wetlands, monitoring migratory pathways, and securing species conservation. Through close cooperation, AEWA and the CIC have worked hand in hand to promote coordinated, science-based, and sustainable hunting practices across local, national, and international levels.
We commend AEWA for its leadership in developing species action plans and improving harvest data—areas in which the CIC, together with its network of state members, NGOs, and scientific partners, has contributed significantly.
“Reliable data and effective collaboration are fundamental to conservation success, and the CIC is committed to delivering both,” said CIC Director General Sebastian Winkler, who added, “AEWA’s inclusive approach continues to foster shared understanding and durable solutions for the benefit of migratory waterbirds.”
On this important milestone, the CIC reaffirms its commitment to AEWA’s mission and to the long-term conservation of migratory waterbirds through responsible, sustainable use.
Happy Anniversary, AEWA!
