Dr. Ruth Cromie, CMS COP-Appointed Councillor for Wildlife Health
Three decades of an effective means to conserve vital wetlands and waterbirds is indeed something to celebrate.
Beyond all the other important achievements, the Agreement has been at the forefront of health in tackling some key One Health issues. In 2005 when highly pathogenic avian influenza spread spectacularly into wild birds and began what would become a global conservation, agricultural and human health concern, AEWA was a founding member of what is now the CMS FAO Scientific Task Force on Avian Influenza and Wildlife supporting Parties in responding to this terrible threat. AEWA’s work on lead poisoning has absolutely paved the way for international agreements and regional and national restrictions on toxic lead ammunition. This health focus has provided essential stepping stones to getting the health and resilience of the environment onto international agendas for the benefit of us all.
So to all the fabulous people involved with AEWA over the years, Happy 30th Birthday AEWA!
