30 Years of AEWA – Statement by Mr. Anwar Hamad Jawed, AEWA National Focal Point, Sudan

Excellencies, distinguished partners, and esteemed colleagues,

On the occasion of the anniversary of the Agreement on the Conservation of AfricanEurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), we extend our heartfelt congratulations and profound appreciation for your unwavering commitment to safeguarding migratory waterbirds and their habitats across continents. AEWA stands as a beacon of international cooperation, demonstrating how collective action can preserve our shared natural heritage for present and future generations.

We are honored to highlight the Republic of Sudan’s pivotal role in advancing the objectives of AEWA. Sudan has demonstrated exemplary leadership in implementing the Agreement’s action plans, particularly through the designation and effective management of Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. Among these, the Khour Abu Habel wetland stands out as a critical stopover site for migratory birds, underscoring Sudan’s commitment to biodiversity conservation.

A hallmark of Sudan’s approach is its inclusive and community-centered conservation model. By actively engaging local communities in habitat management, Sudan has fostered a sense of shared stewardship, ensured the protection of migratory species while simultaneously promoted the sustainable use of ecosystem services. This dual approach not only safeguards avian biodiversity but also enhances livelihoods through eco-tourism, sustainable agriculture, and other nature-based solutions.

The Khour Abu Habel wetland exemplifies this synergy, serving as both a sanctuary for migratory birds and a source of socio-economic benefits for local populations. Such initiatives align seamlessly with AEWA’s vision and the broader goals of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) and the Ramsar Convention.

As we celebrate this milestone, we reaffirm our steadfast support for AEWA’s mission and commend the Republic of Sudan for its remarkable contributions. Together, let us continue to champion the conservation of migratory waterbirds and their habitats, ensuring that these magnificent species endure as a testament to our collective resolve.
