30 Years of AEWA – Statement by Dr Stefan Ferger, Management Team Conservation - Migratory Birds and Cultural Landscapes, EuroNatur Foundation

Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA)

A Message of Support from the EuroNatur Foundation

On the 30th Anniversary of the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), EuroNatur extends its heartfelt congratulations and deep appreciation for three decades of unwavering commitment to the protection of migratory waterbirds and their habitats.

AEWA has been a cornerstone of international conservation, uniting countries across continents in a shared mission to safeguard the flyways that connect us all. Its science-based framework, collaborative spirit, and dedication to habitat protection have not only advanced the conservation of over 250 species of waterbirds but have also fostered a culture of cooperation that transcends borders.

At EuroNatur, we have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of AEWA’s work for the conservation of migratory birds along the Adriatic Flyway. From the protection of Ulcinj Salina in Montenegro to the ongoing work for the Narta Lagoon in Albania, AEWA’s principles have guided and strengthened our efforts. Together with our local partner organisations, we continue to tackle illegal bird killing, promote stronger protection and sustainable management of inland and coastal wetlands, and raise awareness about the ecological and cultural value of migratory birds.

We are especially proud of the synergies created through AEWA’s support for regional initiatives and its role in amplifying the voices of civil society conservationists along the Adriatic Flyway. These partnerships have been vital in addressing threats such as habitat loss and unsustainable hunting and have also supported the accession of AEWA range states to the treaty, like in the case of Serbia in 2019.

As we look to the future, EuroNatur reaffirms its commitment to AEWA’s mission. We pledge to continue our work along the Adriatic Flyway and beyond, advocating for stronger protection of wetlands, deeper collaboration amongst stakeholders, and a renewed sense of urgency in the face of growing environmental challenges.

May the next 30 years of AEWA be marked by even greater achievements, and may the skies remain full of the wings of migratory waterbirds for the generations to come.

With gratitude and solidarity,
EuroNatur Foundation
