AEWA has grown to 57 Contracting Parties
With the Czech Republic and Italy as of 1st September 2006 and Algeria as of 1st October 2006 the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement counts three new Contracting Parties. [read on]
Start of the Wings Over Wetlands - African-Eurasian Flyways Project
With the recent setup of the Project Coordination Unit (PCU), the African-Eurasian Flyways Project, now renamed as Wings over Wetlands (WOW) has been given an important boost. The Wings Over Wetlands project is the largest international wetland and waterbird conservation initiative ever to take place in the African-Eurasian region and its start marks the beginning of a new era for AEWA. Activity of the month: Experts meet for Action Plan Workshop for the Lesser Flamingo
On 25-29 September 2006 around 35 experts from the range states of the Lesser Flamingo (Phoenicopterus minor) met in Nairobi, Kenya and started the process of drafting the International Lesser Flamingo Species Action Plan under the auspices of CMS and AEWA. The workshop was also attended by governmental representatives from the two countries with the largest species population – Tanzania and Kenya. [read on]
Northern Bald Ibis: New RSPB satellite backed website reveals unknown migration routes
August/September 2006 - Sultan, Zenobia and Salam are the names of three Northern Bald Ibises (Geronticus eremita) currently making headlines in the bird conservation world. Not only are the three critically endangered birds members of a recently discovered wild population of Northern Bald Ibises in Syria, but their very movements could reveal the mystery of where these birds spend their winter. Five new Single Species Action Plans and Guidelines published
The Secretariat has recently published five Single Species Action Plans and Guidelines on Avoidance of Introductions of Non-native Waterbird Species. The species which are subject to these Action Plans are the Light-bellied Brent Goose (Branta bernicla hrota), the Northern Bald Ibis (Geronticus eremita), the Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca), the Corncrake (Crex crex) and the White-headed Duck (Oxyura leucocephala). The Agreement barometer
The Agreement barometer is a feature showing how successful the Secretariat has been at accruing the necessary funds to cover the costs linked to the implementation of the Agreement as well as travel costs for funded delegates to AEWA meetings. It also reflects funds received for projects/activities, which are not listed in the Resolution 3.14 on Financial and Administrative Matters. [read on]
