The UNEP/AEWA Secretariat Moves to New UN Premises in Bonn

16-19 June 2006 –The AEWA Secretariat joined the rest of the CMS family (CMS, ASCOBANS and EUROBATS) and a number of other UN Organisations (UNCCD, UNFCCC, UNU, UNV, UN/ISDR-PPEW, UNESCO-UNEVOC, WHO-ECEH) in a long-awaited move to the new United Nations Premises in Bonn, Germany. [read on]

Activity of the month: The International Red-breasted Goose Working Group has a new Coordinator

The Red-breasted Goose (Branta ruficollis) has been listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals for a long time and it is not yet off the list - in the 2006 list edition the species' status is "Vulnerable", which places it amongst the globally threatened birds. In 1996 a Species Action Plan for the Red-breasted Goose was agreed by the Parties to the Bern Convention and by the EU member states. After AEWA came into force in 1999 its Parties recognised, amongst others, this Species Action Plan and decided on its implementation. [read on]

Launch of the European Bird Hunting Bag Statistics program

AEWA represented at CAFF Meeting, 5-9 June 2006

The Executive Secretary participated in the Eleventh Biennal Meeting of the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna Working Group (CAFF XI), which took place from 5-9 June in Ylläs, Finland. During his presentation on AEWA, Bert Lenten offered possibilities of strengthening the cooperation between the CAFF and AEWA Secretariats and reported on the activities of the CMS led Task Force on Avian Influenza and Wild Birds. Belgium is the 54th Party to AEWA

The AEWA Secretariat is pleased to announce that Belgium has joined AEWA as 54th Contracting Party as of 1 June 2006. Bordering France, Luxembourg, Germany, the Netherlands and the North Sea Belgium counts 48 Important Bird Areas (IBA) on 20% of its total surface. In particular, several of the wetland IBAs in the lowlands of the country are important for wintering waterfowl and geese populations. [read on]

The Agreement barometer

The Agreement barometer is a new feature showing how successful the Secretariat has been at accruing the necessary funds to cover the costs linked to the implementation of the Agreement as well as travel costs for funded delegates to AEWA meetings. It also reflects funds received for projects/activities, which are not listed in the Resolution 3.14 on Financial and Administrative Matters. [read on]
