AEWA’s Membership Grows to 71 Parties with Iceland Joining the Agreement

The UNEP/AEWA Secretariat is happy to announce that Iceland has become the 71st Party to the Agreement as of 1 June 2013. Iceland is an island in the North Atlantic Ocean, located between Greenland to the west and Great Britain to the southeast. With 103,000 sq km, it is the second largest island in Europe, and the 18th largest island in the world. [read on]

Successful Flyway Training of Trainers Workshop and Regional World Migratory Bird Day Celebration Held in Kenya

A group of 19 highly motivated participants from 13 Eastern and Southern African countries successfully completed the first-ever AEWA Regional Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop on the Flyway Approach to the Conservation and Wise Use of Waterbirds and Wetlands. National Action Planning Workshop for the Lesser White-fronted Goose in Bulgaria

National stakeholders and international experts came together for a three-day workshop in Sofia to launch the drafting process for a Bulgarian National Action Plan for the Lesser White-fronted Goose (Anser erythropus). The 4th Pan-European Duck Symposium

The next Pan-European Duck Symposium will take place in Hanko, on the spectacular south-western coast of Finland, on 7-11 April 2015, hosted by the Finnish Museum of Natural History. The venue is near to the Hanko Bird Observatory where many ducks, including Common Eiders, Long-tailed Ducks, Goldeneyes and Goosanders, gather on migration. [read on]

In Focus: AEWA Conservation Guideline No. 8 - Guidelines on Reducing Crop Damage, Damage to Fisheries, Bird Strikes and Other Forms of Conflict between Waterbirds and Human Activities

In many parts of the AEWA area, local reductions in hunting pressure, the creation of bird sanctuaries and the expansion of rubbish tips have led to increased survival rates amongst some species of birds.
