Inger Andersen Appointed as UNEP Executive Director

Bonn, 22 February 2019 - Inger Andersen of Denmark is the new Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme. Her nomination to the post by UN Secretary-General António Guterres was approved by acclamation by the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, 20 February.  

Ms Andersen, a former Director General of the IUCN with over three decades’ experience in the field of international development including 15 years at the World Bank, has been appointed for a four-year term.  She studied in London obtaining her BA from what is now the London Metropolitan University and an MA from the School of Oriental and African Studies.

From her years heading the IUCN, Ms Andersen is well versed in issues related to the conservation of biodiversity, and the whole CMS Family would like to extend a very warm welcome to her. We all look forward to working with her over the years to come.
