AEWA MOP8 Daily Coverage for Thursday, 29 September 2022

Budapest, 29 September 2022 – On the third day of AEWA MOP8 in Budapest (Thursday, 29 September 2022), delegates had the option of returning to the meeting venue to attend one or more of the 15 side events that were being offered by many key AEWA Partners and Stakeholders as well as from the side of the host country.

This was the first time the UNEP/AEWA Secretariat designated a full day to side events, instead of squeezing them into the lunch breaks and evenings throughout the course of a MOP.

“I think this was a good decision and possibly could become a model for future meetings,” said Jacques Trouvilliez, Executive Secretary of AEWA “Not only did it give the Secretariat the time it needs to prepare the documents for adoption in the plenary, it also gave greater recognition to the many interesting events being offered by partners, plus more time to network and enjoy the lunch kindly offered by the host government on the other days of the meeting,” said Trouvilliez.

The side events covered a wide range of topics, focusing on specific issues such as lead poisoning, avian influenza, or the case of the Tagus estuary and Donana National Park. Other side events were being offered on the Establishment of the World Coastal Forum and on the RESSOURCE Project, the AEWA European Goose Management Platform (EGMP), and the Wadden Sea Flyway Initiative (WSFI).

The majority of side events were extremely well attended, showing a strong interest among participants in the range of topics being presented. The day of side events was also a very good opportunity for networking and gave participants the chance to get a glimpse of some of the work being done by partners to help implement AEWA. The dedicated day for side events was also attended by representatives from the media, who used it to find topics and conduct interviews on-site with some AEWA MOP8 participants.
