You have probably often heard the expression “climate change” on the news or at school, or heard your parents or friends talk about it. Are you wondering what it means?

When we talk of climate we mean changes in average weather conditions over a long period of time.

Climate change means that the average temperature on earth increases. This is caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

Fossil fuels are coal, oil and gas that we find inside the Earth. We burn fossil fuels to heat our homes and produce electricity.

These fossil fuels produce gases that we call greenhouses gases. The greenhouse gases trap energy in the atmosphere and make the Earth get warmer and warmer.

The increasing temperature not only makes us sweat, it also upsets our environment and damages the animals that live on the Earth, such as migratory birds.
