The AEWA Small Grants Fund (SGF) is a source of financial support aimed at promoting the implementation of the Agreement in developing countries and countries with economies in transition. It has so far focused exclusively on the African region.

Since its launch in 2010, the Fund has benefited both governmental and non-governmental organizations carrying out a wide range of conservation activities in various areas of work. These include, for example, species and habitat conservation, training and awareness-raising for different target groups, survey and monitoring of species and sites, and livelihood related activities.

Background and Project Cycles

The AEWA Small Grants Fund was established through Resolution 1.7 of the 1st Meeting of the Parties to AEWA (MOP1) in 1999. It became operational in 2010, after the 4th Meeting of the AEWA Parties (MOP4) had decided to make SGF funding available from the AEWA core budget for projects in Africa. For the period 2009 to 2012, a sum of EUR 20,000 per year was thus allocated, and these funds were complemented by voluntary contributions from the Governments of France, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. For the period 2013 to 2015, EUR 30,000 are available annually from the AEWA core budget to support SGF projects in Africa.

Eleven projects from eleven African countries (Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Kenya, Madagascar, Tanzania, Ghana, Uganda, Senegal, Guinea and Gabon) have so far been funded under the programme (SGF cycles 2010 to 2013). They have received a total amount of EUR 200,000.

Call to Donors - Support the AEWA Small Grants Fund!

Currently, the AEWA core budget support for the AEWA Small Grants Fund can sponsor no more than one project per year. The success of the Fund therefore relies predominantly on further financial support. Any financial contributions from AEWA Contracting Parties and other donors will make a difference!

If you wish to support the AEWA Small Grants Fund or if you have any questions about the Fund, please contact the UNEP/AEWA Secretariat at aewa@unep.de.

The CMS Small Grants Programme

AEWA’s mother convention, the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), operates the CMS Small Grants Programme (SGP). The SGP aims to facilitate the implementation of CMS at the grass-roots level, particularly in developing countries. Thanks to a voluntary contribution from UNEP, a total of 300,000 USD were made available for the period 2012-2014 for CMS SGP projects. Governmental institutions, non-governmental organizations, communities, conservationists and researchers engaged in the conservation of migratory species in Contracting Parties to CMS, may submit proposals. Further information on the CMS SGP can be found on the SGP website.
