Seminar on Avian Influenza and Wild Birds confirms: Avian
Influenza is a result of human-induced environmental change
On 10-11 April 2006 AEWA
and CMS
in partnership with UNEP
convened a seminar on Avian Influenza, the Environment and Migratory Birds
at UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. The concept of the seminar was to
bring together experts from relevant disciplines in order to review the
latest scientific evidence on the role played by wild birds in the spread
of avian influenza, to identify follow-up action and to produce recommendations
for decision makers, the media and other stakeholders on actions to be taken
in the context of conservation and the environment. [read

First World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) launched at Ol Ari
Nyiro, Laikipia, Kenya
On the occasion of the first World Migratory
Bird Day (WMBD),
Kuki Gallmann and The
Great Rift Valley Trust together with the African-Eurasian
Waterbird Agreement (AEWA)
and the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS),
hosted WINGS, a cultural and artistic show inspired by the phenomenon of
bird migration. The event took place on the Laikipia Nature Conservancy,
a 350 km² nature reserve and biodiversity oasis overlooking the Kenyan
part of the 7200 km long Great Rift Valley - a bird migration route of global
importance. It brought together key individuals from leading organizations
such as BirdLife and Wetlands International dedicated to bird conservation
and was the heart of a new global initiative initiated by CMS and AEWA to
celebrate and inform about the phenomenon of bird migration annually.[read

‘World Migratory Bird Day’ activity in Cyprus
On 30 April 2006 the Migratory Birds Commission
of the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC)
in partnership with AEWA, CMS,
the Cyprus Game Fund, Face
and BirdLife
organized a Migratory Bird Day in Limassol, Cyprus. The programme of the
event, which was attended by the participants of the 53rd
CIC General Assembly (1-5 May 2006, Limassol, Cyprus) as well
as the general public, started with an informative part on migratory birds,
their conservation, avian influenza and its impact on waterbird hunting.
In his 15-minute presentation Bert Lenten, Executive Secretary of AEWA,
stressed the importance of international cooperation for the conservation
of migratory waterbirds. “The acceptance of the so-called flyway approach,
which stands for the shared responsibility of all countries along the flyways,
was the first success story of AEWA and the basis for its work”, emphasized

New wetland capacity building award in Africa: Ramsar
and Crane Bank team up to promote the wise use concept of wetlands in the
African region
The AEWA Secretariat would like to take this
opportunity to highlight and help endorse the new “Crane Bank Ramsar
Award for the Wise Use of Wetlands” which encourages young African
professionals to learn more about the wise use of wetlands by enabling them
to participate in a two-week tour of duty with Uganda’s
Wetlands Inspection Division. [read

Bert Lenten reappointed as Executive Secretary of AEWA
The AEWA Secretariat is happy to announce that Bert Lenten
has been reappointed as Executive Secretary of AEWA. Mr. Lenten started
his work as Executive Secretary of the Interim Secretariat of AEWA on 1
January 1996 and was appointed for the fixed-term position as Executive
Secretary when the permanent Secretariat was set up in Bonn, Germany, in
June 2000. [read
