The Secretariats of the African-Eurasian
Migratory Waterbird Agreement (UNEP/AEWA)
and the Convention on Migratory Species (UNEP/CMS)
are glad to announce the countdown for World Migratory Bird
Day 2009. The two-day awareness raising campaign will take
place globally for the fourth consecutive year from 9-10

The first meeting of the Steering Group of the relaunched Slender-billed Curlew Working Group (SbCWG) took place at the UN Premises in Bonn on 11 February 2009 in the framework of the Convention on Migratory Species'
(CMS) Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the critically endangered species. [read

Five months after the successful 4th Session of the Meeting of the Parties
to AEWA, held in Antananarivo, Madagascar from 15-19 September 2008, the
AEWA Secretariat is glad to announce that the first products of the meeting
are now available. [read

4th Meeting of the Parties to AEWA (September 2008, Madagascar)
adopted Resolution
4.9 ‘African Initiative for the Conservation of Migratory
Waterbirds and their Habitats in Africa’. This was one of the
most innovative outcomes of MOP4 and was welcomed by all stakeholders. [read

At the end of 2008, the Governments of Switzerland and France decided to provide
some end-of-year money towards the implementation of the Wings Over Wetlands
(WOW) UNEP-GEF African-Eurasian Flyways Project.

In paragraph 2(f) under Article III of the Agreement text, special attention
is given to emergency situations and the required international concerted
action by Parties for migratory waterbird species. An emergency situation
for migratory waterbirds is defined as "(…) a situation where a sudden,
unusual change takes place (or is likely to take place) in the occurrence
or mortality rate of waterbirds, or in the extent or condition of the habitats
on which they depend". [read

The UNEP/AEWA Secretariat has launched the application process for a Coordinator
for the Lesser White-fronted Goose Single Species Action Plan” (extendable
by 12 months, funding permitting). This consultancy is based at the AEWA
Secretariat in Bonn, Germany. The extended deadline for submission of applications
by interested candidates is 19 March 2009. [read
