AEWA joins the 'Great Rift Valley Initiative' and becomes
a member of its Steering Committee
A
scientific workshop was convened on 26-29 March 2007 at the UNEP Headquarters
in Nairobi, Kenya to discuss the possibilities of nominating the Great Rift
Valley (GRV) for World Heritage status. The workshop recognised the outstanding
universal value of the GRV, the cradle of humankind, with its cultural and
natural heritage, its cultural landscapes, its biodiversity and its importance
as a flyway for migratory birds. [read

Technical Committee Working Groups meet at the AEWA Secretariat
Eight waterbird specialists, members of the AEWA Technical Committee, followed
the invitation of the AEWA Secretariat and participated in the ad hoc workshop
of the Technical Committee Working Groups 1-4 that took place in Bonn on
13th March. They dealt with a number of tasks of the TC work plan 2006-2008
as instructed by MOP3. [read

Waterbirds around the World
On
12 March 2007 the Proceedings of the Global Flyways Conference (Edinburgh,
April 2004) were launched in The Hague, the Netherlands. This publication
named ‘Waterbirds around the World’ gives an insight
into the current state of knowledge on waterbirds, their migration routes
and ongoing international conservation efforts. It includes a large number
of conservation studies from different countries worldwide, which address
the wide range of factors that pose a threat to waterbird populations: loss
and degradation of wetland habitats; climate change; diseases; and unsustainable
use including impacts of disturbance. [read

Project of the month: World Migratory Bird Day to take
place on 12 - 13 May 2007
World
Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) 2007 is coming up! For the second time, AEWA and
CMS are inviting people, cultures and nations to come together and to celebrate
the beauty and ecological importance of migrating birds! Last year more
than 46 nations responded to the call and organised events all over the
world making WMBD 2006 a great success. These unique events varied from
bird watching tours and educational workshops to dramas, exhibitions and
film competitions and were held everywhere: in the Arctic region as well
as in the savannah, in low valleys and high mountain ranges, in big town
halls and small schools all over the world. [read

WOW Project Update: Focus on the Critical Sites Network
Tool
The
AEWA Secretariat will use this section of the AEWA E-Newsletter to provide
regular updates and information on the implementation of the Wings Over
Wetlands (WOW) UNEP-GEF African-Eurasian Flyways Project. The goal is to
highlight project news and to introduce different elements of the project
to interested readers on a continuous basis by focussing on a separate project
component, a project partner or an individual demonstration project in each
issue. This first issue gives interested readers a basic overview on the
project and a first introduction to the Critical Sites Network (CSN) Tool
being developed in the framework of the project. [read

AEWA MOP3 Newsletter published
The AEWA Secretariat has recently published a special Newsletter with a
focus on the the Third Meeting of the Parties, which took place on 23 -
27 October 2005 in Dakar, Senegal. This Newsletter aims to provide policy-makers,
NGOs and other interested stakeholders with the facts of the meeting (discussions,
outcomes, side-events) as well as some personal views provided by participants.
