Vacancy: GOVERNANCE OFFICER, CONSTITUENCY SUPPORT
UNIT

Background:
The World Congress is the highest organ of IUCN and
consists of the delegates of IUCN members meeting
in session (ordinary sessions are held every fourth
year, the most recent in Barcelona, Spain, October
2008). Between sessions of the Congress, the Council
(or governing board) has responsibility for the oversight
and general control of all the affairs of IUCN and
it meets twice a year, normally at IUCN Headquarters
(the next meeting is scheduled for February 2009).
The members of the Council are: (a) the President;
(b) the Treasurer; (c) the Chairs of the Commissions
(the networks of scientific and technical experts
who serve IUCN as volunteers); (d) the Regional Councillors;
(e) a Councillor from Switzerland where IUCN has its
seat; and (f) up to five additional appointed Councillors,
chosen by the Council on the basis of diverse qualifications,
interests and skills. Among the responsibilities of
the Council are the appointment and evaluation of
the work of the Director General. The Director General
is the chief executive of IUCN and the head of the
Secretariat.
This Governance Officer position has been created
to ensure that the Council is fully supported by the
Secretariat in order to perform effectively and efficiently
in its governance functions. The incumbent is supported
by two part-time (50%) Assistants.
The Constituency Support Unit provides support for
the governance structures of the Union and to the
IUCN members and Commissions, working in close consultation
with the Director General, the Deputy Director General,
and global thematic and regional directors.

The World Conservation
Monitoring Centre is the biodiversity information and
policy support arm of the United Nations Environment
Programme whose aim is to place authoritative biodiversity
information in the hands of the world's environmental
decision-makers in all sectors. Based in Cambridge,
UK, we are now seeking additional enthusiastic people
for the following exciting and challenging opportunities
within our Centre.
The UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC),
based in Cambridge UK, is the specialist biodiversity
information and assessment centre of the United
Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), run cooperatively
with WCMC 2000, a UK charity. UNEP-WCMC’s
mission is to evaluate and highlight the many values
of biodiversity and put authoritative biodiversity
knowledge at the centre of decision-making. Since
its establishment in the 1970s, it has been at the
forefront of the compilation, management, analysis
and dissemination of global biodiversity information,

| The
Convention on Wetlands, also known as the Ramsar Convention
from the name of the city in Iran where it was signed
in 1971, is an intergovernmental treaty which provides
the framework for national action and international
cooperation in the conservation and sustainable use
of wetland biodiversity and resources. It is the first
of the modern global conservation treaties and is
still the only one devoted to a specific ecosystem.
The Convention presently has 158 Contracting Parties
(member countries), which have so far designated 1755
wetlands around the world, covering 161 million hectares,
for the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance.
Duty Station: Gland,
Switzerland
Duration: The posts
offer an opportunity for young graduates to become
acquainted with the workings of an intergovernmental
treaty dealing with the conservation and sustainable
use of natural resources and, more specifically, wetland
ecosystems. The upper age limit of applicants is 30
years old.
The interns are assigned to assist
one of the Senior Regional Advisors dealing with Africa,
Americas, Asia/Pacific, and Europe in the full range
of their activities, as required during different
periods of the year

Harry Oppenheimer Okavango Research Centre, Maun,

Applications are invited for the following academic
positions at the Harry Oppenheimer Okavango Research
Centre (HOORC).
The Research Centre is based in Maun in the North
Western part of Botswana and specializes in natural
resources management, sustainable natural resource
use and conservation in the world famous Okavango
Delta and the Kgalagadi (Kalahari) region. The Centre
is organized into five Research Units: Land and
Water; Ecosystems; Governance; Livelihoods; and
Tourism. It has a good library (a branch of the
University library in Gaborone) and excellent research
laboratories.
The Centre is housed in modern facilities with
65 academic and support staff in total. The Centre
attracts significant international funding and is
becoming generally acknowledged as a global research
leader in natural resources management.

La Tour du Valat et l'Université de Bourgogne
lancent un appel à candidature pour une thèse
intitulée: "Biologie et génétique
des populations de flamants roses, Phoenicopterus
ruber roseus : application à la conservation
de l'espèce": |
La
conservation des espèces d'oiseaux d'eau coloniaux
nécessite de connaître à la fois
leur structure métapopulationnelle et les facteurs
qui conditionnent leur succès reproducteur.
Le Flamant rose, Phoenicopterus roseus, espèce
emblématique de la conservation des zones humides,
possède une large distribution géographique
mais n'exploite qu'un nombre très limité
de sites pour sa reproduction. Une meilleure connaissance
du fonctionnement métapopulationnel de l'espèce
et des causes de variation de son succès reproducteur
représentent donc deux enjeux majeurs pour
la conservation de l'espèce. L'objet de cette
thèse est de contribuer efficacement aux mesures
de gestion, d'une part en établissant le degré
de connectivité existant entre les différents
sous-ensembles populationnels décrits jusqu'à
présent, et d'autre part en évaluant
quantitativement la contribution de différents
facteurs endogènes et exogènes au succès
reproducteur.
La thèse sera co-encadrée

Wetlands International:

Background:
Wetlands International is a leading global,
non-profit organisation dedicated to wetlands conservation
and wise use as a contribution to sustainable development.
The organisation has a core staff of around 150 people
in 16 offices world wide and cooperates with an active
world-wide network of wetland scientists, managers
and conservationists. Wetlands International works
with partners in government, NGO’s and the private
sector and manages a large number of global level,
multi-partner projects as well as working at the grass
roots level with community groups. Wetlands International
is governed by a prestigious Board of Directors, which
is overseen by an International Board of Members of
over 150 individuals, including representatives of
national governments, donor organisations, Specialist
Groups, and partner organisations as well as members-at-large.
The Wageningen office is the headquarters of the global
organisation, while the Africa regional office is
based in Dakar, Senegal
The postholder will be an integral part of the
growing Africa regional team, which is seeking expand
its programme covering wetlands issues and their
linkages with, amongst others, poverty reduction,
biodiversity conservation and integrated water resources
management. The PDA will support the Project Development
officer and project management staff to develop
new initiatives, partnerships and attain new financial
resources.
