It’s official! The winners of the
2009 World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD)
Drawing Competition have now been selected and the names
of the winners are as follows:
The WMBD team at the Secretariats of the
Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory
Waterbirds (UNEP/AEWA) and Convention on Migratory Species
(UNEP/CMS)
congratulate the winners and thank all the participants
for taking action and sharing their creative and visionary
artwork with us.
World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD)
was initiated by AEWA and CMS in 2006 to raise awareness
on the need to protect migratory birds and their habitats
and to inspire people to take action.
Following the announcement
on the WMBD website, the AEWA Secretariat received
over 500 drawings from children up to 16 years from all
over the world, e.g. Kazakhstan, India, Australia, Italy,
Tunisia and many other countries. The participants were
invited to use their imagination and to portray their thoughts
on this year’s theme “Barriers to migration”
with the aim to highlight the effects man-made structures,
such as wind turbines, power lines, communication masts,
tall buildings and fences have on migratory birds on their
journeys every year.
Due to the large number of drawings submitted
and in order to ensure a fair competition, we divided the
drawings into three age groups: from 5-8 years, 9-12 years
and 13-16 years. The pre-selection was carried out by staff
members at the CMS and AEWA Secretariats, who were asked
to indicate their favourite drawings in each age category.
The selected drawings from each age group were then presented
as part of an exhibition in the entrance hall of the UN
Premises in Bonn, giving more than 400 UN Staff members
the chance to make the final selection. One winner was then
chosen from the four nominees in each age group. The prizes
for the 2009 WMBD Drawing Competition were generously donated
by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB)
and have already been sent to the winners and nominees of
this year’s competition.
With a view to 2010, the next World Migratory
Bird Day will take place on the second weekend of May (8-9
May 2010) under the theme “Save migratory birds in
crisis – every species counts!” The theme is
closely linked to the
International Year of Biodiversity (IYB)
that has been announced by the United Nations General Assembly
for the year 2010 to bring greater international attention
to the continued loss of biodiversity worldwide. To support
the campaign, WMBD 2010 will focus on those migratory birds,
which are under the greatest threat of becoming extinct.
All submitted drawings and the selected
winners of this year’s WMBD Drawing Competition can
be viewed in an online gallery on the AEWA and WMBD websites:
