Bonn,
20 August 2008 - The AEWA Secretariat is pleased to
announce that the Republic of Estonia - the third Baltic
State besides Lithuania and Latvia – will accede to
the Agreement as of 1 November 2008 and will raise AEWA
membership to 62 countries.
Estonia stretches over 45,100km² and the country is
dominated by more than 1,400 natural and artificial lakes
and by more than 1,500 islands. Estonia lies in the northern
part of the temperate mixed forest zone and about 40% of
the country is covered by forest. Estonia has 43 Important
Bird Areas (IBAs) covering 4,756 km², representing
11% of the land area of the country.
One of these Important Bird Areas is also
a Demonstration Site of the Wings Over Wetlands Project
(WOW) UNEP-GEF African-Eurasian Flyways Project –
the Haapsalu-Noarootsi Bays. The site is a complex wetland
system comprising different Nature Reserves on the northwestern
coast of Estonia and is part of the Eastern Atlantic flyway,
which is very important for the protection of Arctic water
birds.
Estonia is a range state for a number
of AEWA species including the Lesser White-fronted Goose
(Anser erythropus), the Steller’s Eider (Polysticta
stelleri), the Corncrake (Crex crex), the
Great Snipe (Gallinago media) and the Black-tailed
Godwit (Limosa limosa).
The AEWA Secretariat is happy to welcome
the Republic of Estonia to the “AEWA Family”
and looks forward to further productive cooperation in implementing
the Agreement in Estonia!
