The
stork lady named „Prinzesschen“ (little princess)
has perished at the proud age of 16 years at her wintering
ground in South Africa. She become
particularly well-known in Germany as part of a research
project based at the ornithological station in Radolfzell.
Outfitted with a small transmitter on
her back, she continuously delivered data on her flyway
from Saxony-Anhalt in Germany to South Africa, a journey
of approximately 11.000km in total. In 2002 German television
even telecasted her spring migration route in a morning
programme. Since 1998 until her death, the last record of
her flight position was registered on 22 December 2006,
countless people have been able to follow “Prinzesschen”
online to her wintering grounds (www.naturdetektive.de).
In this way, she has been an excellent ambassador for the
fascination of bird migration.
