AEWA
would like to call attention to the biodiversity consultation
of the European Commission.
The objective of this consultation is to seek views on what
needs to be done if the EU is to deliver on its commitments
to halt the loss of biodiversity in the EU by 2010 and to
contribute towards significantly reducing the rate of biodiversity
loss worldwide by 2010.
The consultation also suggests a number
of ‘key challenges’ and ‘key delivery
measures’ to 2010 and beyond, such as safeguarding
priority sites and species; conserving and restoring biodiversity
in the wider countryside and marine environment outside
of protected areas; reconciling territorial development
with biodiversity; supporting biodiversity adaptation to
climate change; reducing the impact of invasive alien species;
and integrating biodiversity concerns into policy-making.
The purpose of the questionnaire is to
receive an assessment from respondents of how important
they think biodiversity and ecosystem services are for our
prosperity, security and quality of life. It also seeks
opinion on the general policy approach proposed.
The questionnaire is open to the public
and can be filled out at the following location until 6
February 2006:
