Bonn,
16-19 June 2006 –The AEWA Secretariat joined the rest
of the CMS family (CMS,
ASCOBANS
and EUROBATS)
and a number of other UN Organisations (UNCCD,
UNFCCC,
UNU,
UNV,
UN/ISDR-PPEW,
UNESCO-UNEVOC,
WHO-ECEH)
in a long-awaited move to the new United Nations Premises
in Bonn, Germany.
The permanent Secretariat of the AEWA was initially set
up in Bonn and co-located with CMS and the other Agreements
at Haus
Carstanjen in 2000. Since then the number of
staff working for the “CMS Family” has grown
steadily and lead to a shortage of office space. In July
2004 the three Agreements moved to another building (OBS).
AEWA’s new offices will now be located with those
of the “CMS Family” in the central building
of the new UN Campus. The building, which is known throughout
Germany as the “Langer
Eugen”, a familiar public landmark that
previously housed the members of the German Parliament before
this was moved to Berlin in 1999, has been fully renovated
and is being generously provided by the Government of Germany.
“For AEWA, the move to the new building will not only
mean additional and much improved office space for the Secretariat,
but also more visibility as part of the new UN Premises
in Germany”, explained Bert Lenten, the Executive
Secretary of AEWA. “I am excited that AEWA will now
have a permanent office in Langer Eugen, a building symbolically
tied to the former capital and history of our host country”.
The entire 19th floor of the “Langer Eugen”
will be allocated to AEWA and will allow for limited growth
of the Secretariat in the near future.
Commenting on the move, CMS Executive Secretary Robert
Hepworth said “The move to the new UN campus will
allow the CMS Secretariat and our Bonn based Agreements
to be re-united in one office after more than two years
apart. This will give a boost to internal communication”.
CMS, also known as the Bonn Convention and its co-located
Agreements are the only UN organizations on the new UN Campus
that are administered by the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP)
in Nairobi, Kenya.
The AEWA Secretariat would like to take this opportunity
to express its sincere gratitude to the Government of Germany,
the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature
Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU)
and to the City
of Bonn for providing AEWA with a new landmark
space for its permanent Secretariat. We look forward to
contributing our part to the common goal of sustainable
development which unites all United Nations organizations
on the new UN Premises in Bonn.
