Statement by Jacques Trouvilliez, Executive Secretary of AEWA on the International Day for Biological Diversity

I could not agree more with the slogan of this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity: “We’re part of the solution.” COVID-19 has reminded us how much we depend on nature and on international cooperation to address the challenges the world is facing today. The ongoing fight against the pandemic, climate change and biodiversity loss are all global problems which require us to work together as a community of nations and people living on one planet. Addressing these interconnected challenges will not only require increased global cooperation, it will also require an all-of-society approach in which every nation, every business and every individual recognizes that they are all part of the solution.

Our future depends on how we will address these challenges, which in turn is closely linked to the value we give to nature and biodiversity in our societies. And while the pandemic has helped make many more people aware of the role of the environment and the importance of protecting the variety of plant and animals life on our shared planet, the big litmus test for global ambition and action for nature will be the adoption of a new and robust Global Biodiversity Framework in China. As the Executive Secretary of the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), I would like to reassure you that AEWA is part of the solution and stands ready to continue to play its important part in tackling these global challenges by promoting international cooperation for the benefit of migratory waterbirds and people across the African-Eurasian Flyway.
