Bonn, 11 November 2009 - The AEWA Secretariat
is pleased to announce the release of its Technical Series
No. 35 and its Popular Series No. 2. Both publications
can be downloaded from the AEWA website and hardcopies
of the publications are now available from the Secretariat.

Popular Series No. 2: Phasing out the use of lead
shot for hunting in wetlands: Experiences made and lessons
learned by AEWA Range States - According to Paragraph
4.1.4. of the AEWA Action Plan any Party to AEWA "shall
endeavour to phase out the use of lead shot for hunting
in wetlands as soon as possible and in accordance with
self-imposed and published timetables." An international
review on the use of lead shot for hunting in wetlands,
undertaken in 2007 by the AEWA Secretariat, has shown
that the problem is still far from solved in the majority
of the AEWA Range States. However, very good progress
has been made in individual countries having introduced
a legal ban on the use of lead shot for hunting in wetlands.
In order to be able to benefit from the experiences made
in a number of countries and to enable other AEWA Parties
and Range States to learn from the countries, which have
already gone through the process of phasing out the use
of lead shot for hunting in wetlands, the AEWA Secretariat
distributed a series of questionnaires on this issue among
governmental focal points and hunting organisations. The
findings of this survey have been summarized in this new
publication, which is also available in French. Popular

Technical
Series No. 35: International Single Species Action Plan
for the Conservation of the Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea
leucorodia - This International
Single Species Action Plan was prepared by the International
Spoonbill Working Group with support of Eurosite,
Syndicat Mixte Baie
de Somme, Vereniging
Natuurmonumenten, Wetlands
International and Euronatur.
It was adopted by the 4th Session of the Meeting of the
Parties in September 2008 in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

This Action Plan addresses all the stakeholders in the
relevant Range States for the different Eurasian Spoonbill
populations, providing them with constructive guidance
for carrying out conservation measures to protect this
