AEWA Technical Committee Convenes to Review Progress in Work Plan Implementation

The 19th Meeting of the AEWA Technical Committee (TC19) was successfully held as a virtual event on 12 – 14 March 2024. The three-day meeting brought together a total of 62 participants from across Africa and Eurasia, including regional representatives, experts from a wide spectrum of fields as well as 16 Party Observers and several key implementing partner organizations of the Agreement.

Welcome to Melissa Lewis as Species Officer 

The UNEP/AEWA Secretariat is pleased to announce the recruitment of Dr. Melissa Lewis as the Agreement’s new Species Officer. Well-known to many within the AEWA network, Melissa will be responsible for overseeing and guiding AEWA’s framework for species action and management planning.  A national of South Africa, Melissa’s educational and professional background lies predominantly in nature conservation law. She holds both a Bachelor, and Master of Law degree from Rhodes University (South Africa), a Master’s in environmental law from Lewis & Clark Law School (USA), and a PhD in this field from Tilburg University (the Netherlands).

Welcome to Bruno Pereira Leles as EGMP Coordinator 

The UNEP/AEWA Secretariat is pleased to announce the recruitment of Dr. Bruno Pereira Leles as the new Coordinator of the European Goose Management Platform (EGMP). As EGMP Coordinator, Bruno will be responsible for supporting the structured decision-making process and coordination mechanism among the EGMP stakeholders aiming to implement sustainable use and management strategies for goose populations in Europe.

IN MEMORIAM – In memory of Richard Hearn (1971 -2024)

It is with great sadness that the AEWA Secretariat has learned of the untimely death of Richard (Rich) Hearn at the age of 52 following an illness. Rich was a much appreciated and active member of the AEWA Technical Committee, initially as the WWT representative, and then also representing IUCN in his role as Global Chair of the IUCN-SSC Duck Specialist Group.

Memorandum of Understanding Signed Between the AEWA Secretariat and ACBK to Bolster Sociable Lapwing Conservation

The Secretariat of the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (UNEP/AEWA Secretariat) and the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK) renewed their partnership during a side event on the margins of the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (COP14), which began in Samarkand today.

La Journée mondiale des oiseaux migrateurs 2024 se concentrera sur les insectes

Nous sommes heureux d'annoncer que, pour la première fois, la campagne de la prochaine Journée mondiale des oiseaux migrateurs en 2024 se concentrera sur l'importance des insectes pour les oiseaux migrateurs et soulignera les préoccupations liées à la diminution des populations d'insectes.  Les insectes sont des sources d'énergie essentielles pour de nombreuses espèces d'oiseaux migrateurs, non seulement pendant les saisons de reproduction, mais aussi au cours de leurs longs voyages, et influencent grandement le moment, la durée et le succès global des migrations d'oiseaux.

Coordinating Flyway Action for the Threatened Slaty Egret

The first Meeting of the AEWA Slaty Egret International Working Group (IWG) was successfully held in Maun, Botswana from 13 – 15 September 2023. The meeting brought together 17 representatives from five of the six Range States of the Slaty Egret. The meeting was hosted by the Government of the Republic of Botswana and co-organized by the UNEP/AEWA Secretariat and the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) of Botswana.

UN-led Task Force Issues Guidance on Addressing Unprecedented Outbreaks of Avian Influenza in Wildlife

Bonn, 13 July 2023 – The Scientific Task Force on Avian Influenza and Wild Birds – co-convened by the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) – has sounded the alarm on the current near-global spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and the unparalleled scale of mortality among wild birds. Among other recommendations, the Task Force urges countries to consider HPAI as a conservation issue, plan accordingly and avoid culling measures of wild birds. It also calls for a ‘One Health’ approach to ensure appropriate cross-sectoral attention to human, animal and environmental health.
