The Eurasian Spoonbill International Expert Group Met in Zadar, Croatia, October 3-7, 2022, for its 10th International Workshop

Jointly organized by the Croatian Society for Birds and Nature Protection, the Department of Biology University of Osijek, the CASA Institute of Ornithology, and the Tour du Valat, Research Institute for the Conservation of Mediterranean Wetlands, this workshop gathered 29 participants from 15 different countries. The group was created in 1992, and this workshop takes place every three years. It involves staff from various nature conservation organizations, including scientists, members of NGOs, managers of breeding sites, students, all passionate about this emblematic wetland species.

Press Release: African and Eurasian Nations Commit to Strengthen Resources for the Conservation of Rapidly Declining Migratory Waterbirds

The Eighth Meeting of the Parties (MOP8) to the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) held under the theme “Strengthening Flyway Conservation in a Changing World” concluded today in Budapest, Hungary with the adoption of 16 resolutions and new guidelines aiming to improve the conservation status of 255 migratory waterbirds listed under the UN-backed treaty. Species covered by AEWA include iconic species such as the White Stork, Red-breasted Goose and the Black Crowned Crane.

Budapest, 20 September 2022 – The final and closing day of AEWA MOP8 in Budapest (Friday, 30 September 2022) began with a special ceremony to honor two recipients of the AEWA Conservation Award as well as the recognition of a Champion Plus under the Migratory Species Champions Programme – a fundraising scheme designed to support the implementation of AEWA and the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) Family of Agreements.

AEWA MOP8 Daily Coverage for Wednesday 28 September 2022

The Eight Meeting of the Parties (MOP8) to the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) resumed in two working groups on the second day of the meeting. Following regional consultations in the morning, Working Group I resumed their deliberations on the Budget, while Working Group II on Scientific and Technical Matters reviewed and agreed on amendments to draft resolutions and other documents to be tabled for adoption in plenary on Friday, 30th September.

The meeting was officially opened by Ms Flora Mokgohloa (South Africa) as Chair of AEWA MOP7, who thanked the Government of Hungary for hosting the meeting.

Press Release - Hungary Hosts UN Waterbird Conference

The Eighth Session of the Meeting of the Parties to the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA MOP8) opened in Budapest, Hungary, today.  AEWA MOP8 will be an important policymaking forum ahead of a series of biodiversity-related meetings in the coming months, culminating with the UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP 15) hosted by Canada under the presidency of China at the end of the year.  The AEWA Meeting was originally scheduled to take place in October 2021 alongside the One With Nature World of Hunting and Nature Exhibition in Budapest, but had to be postponed.
