In Focus: AEWA Conservation Guidelines No. 1 – Guidelines on the Preparation of National Single Species Action Plans for Migratory Waterbirds

Bonn, 7 October 2014 - A Single Species Action Plan (SSAP) is a prescriptive plan for a species or a population of a species, aimed at maintaining that species at, or restoring it to, a favourable conservation status.

According to Paragraph 2.2 of the AEWA Action Plan, Parties to AEWA shall co-operate with a view to developing and implementing international SSAPs for those populations of migratory waterbirds listed in Category 1 of Column A of Table 1 to the Agreement’s Action Plan and those Column A populations marked with an asterisk. These are the populations with the least favourable conservation status. Paragraph 2.2 of the Action Plan also requires Parties to prepare and implement national SSAPs for all populations of waterbirds listed in Column A of Table 1, with special provisions to be included for those populations marked with an asterisk.

The AEWA Conservation Guidelines No. 1
focus on national Single Species Action Plans. They identify seven major steps that outline a standard procedure for the preparation and implementation of such action plans. They aim to support Parties with the preparation of these plans and help them to identify priority species and populations occurring in their country.
