UNEP Family Bonn on the Move - Running for Migratory Species

Bonn, 17 April 2015 – Next Sunday, 19 April, the UNEP Family of Bonn will be participating in the Deutsche Post Bonn Marathon with 16 runners representing the CMS, AEWA and IPBES Secretariats. With about 12,000 participants and 200,000 spectators, the Bonn Marathon is among the ten most important such races in Germany. This year again, the runners will cross the city, along the Rhine, and past the UN Building “Langer Eugen” which has meanwhile become one of the town’s best known landmarks.

The Secretariat for the Conservation of Migratory Species, also known as the “Bonn Convention”, was signed 1979 in Bonn. This year again, the Convention will be represented by a colourful team of 16 runners of 11 different nationalities (Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Kenya, Mongolia, Nigeria, South Africa and Spain). They will be competing the half marathon and the marathon as relay teams under the motto “We swim, we fly, we rUN”, proudly wearing the highly-prized CMS T-shirt of animals on the move - a dolphin, a swallow and an elephant, representing marine, avian and terrestrial species.

The United Nations in Bonn is currently represented by 18 organizations dedicated to supporting sustainable development worldwide, dealing amongst others with biodiversity, desertification or climate change, making out of the city the “UN green hub” of Germany.
