The RESSOURCE Project Presented Two Side-Events at the 8th Session of the Meeting of the Parties to AEWA

Budapest, 30 September 2022 - The RESSOURCE Project team presented the major results and outcomes obtained since 2017 in the five participating countries (Senegal, Mali, Tchad, Sudan and Egypt). The achievements covered a diversity of areas including waterbird monitoring, database management, wetlands conservation initiatives, support to Ramsar sites designation, socio-economic assessment of waterbird harvesting, legal analysis, training and capacity building.

Participants at the side event experienced life on the ground through a series of engaging videos. The national focal point from Sudan was invited to the podium and expressed gratitude on behalf of the Sudanese administration for the support provided, particularly in the Khor Abu Habil designation as a Ramsar site.

The legal review work undertaken by the FAO Development Law Service on the domestication of AEWA and Ramsar across the five countries, which is available online through the Legal-Hub, was appreciated by all participants. The delegate from Egypt commended this work, and acknowledged its contribution to the environmental law reform process in the country.

I am delighted on the positive feedbacks received from participants to the RESSOURCE side-events presented on 29 September at the 8th Session of the Meeting of the Parties to AEWA (MOP8) in Budapest. For the RESSOURCE Project team, it was a great opportunity to share results and outcomes after years of work in the field. We are grateful to the AEWA Secretariat for offering this visibility and address our warm thanks and congratulations for the great work in preparing these side-events session. All the side-events were extremely interesting, not only for their fascinating content highlighting the wide variety of activities implemented for waterbirds and people in the field, but also because they allow interaction with the many actors and stakeholders involved and open room for contacts, stimulating discussion, collaborations and synergies across projects, initiatives, operators …

During a second side-event, participants had an opportunity to discover and test sample modules and sequences from a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) being developed by the RESSOURCE Project entitled: “Identifier et dénombrer les oiseaux d'eau d'Afrique du Nord et du Sahel: Comment et dans quel but?”.

The MOOC was welcomed by many participants and will fill a needed gap in the online availability of waterbird training tools and information. The first version of this MOOC will be available shortly in French on the MOOC-Conservation platform. English and Arabic versions may be developed subject to funding.

Launched in 2017, the RESSOURCE Project, stands for "Strengthening Expertise in South Sahara on Birds and their Rational Use for Communities and their Environment".  Coordinated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and co-funded by the French Global Environment Facility and the European Union, the RESSOURCE Project aims to improve the sustainable use of natural resources, particularly waterbirds, in the wetlands of Egypt, Mali, Senegal, Sudan and Chad. It is is the Sahelian component of the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme, an initiative of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS).
