People behind AEWA - David Stroud

Bonn, 6 November 2015 - David is from the UK and has been working with waterbirds and their conservation since 1978. His initial involvement with the Greenland White-fronted Goose Study continues to the present day and gives occasional opportunities for fieldwork ‘therapy’ in Iceland and Greenland.

Through his work as an ornithological advisor with the UK’s Joint Nature Conservation Committee he has been involved with national and international initiatives for waterbird and wetland conservation, working with Ramsar, Wetlands International, the EU Birds Directive, CMS and AEWA – where he serves as the current Chair of the AEWA Technical Committee. In particular the opportunity to help steer the UK’s national monitoring scheme: the Wetland Bird Survey, has given David an interesting scope to work between national and international scales.

“The importance of AEWA lies not just in its formal decision making by governments, but also in providing a common mission for people in so many countries – who share responsibility for the conservation of these amazing migratory birds.”

David’s favourite AEWA species is the Greenland White-fronted Goose.
