During the adoption process of the Lesser
White-fronted Goose Action Plan at the AEWA 4th Meeting
of the Parties (MOP4) in Antananarivo, Madagascar, a number
of delegates from the species’ 23 Range States shared
their thoughts on the plan itself and their visions on the

Jaakkola, Environment Counsellor for the
Ministry of the Environment in Finland and head of
the Finnish delegation in Madagascar explains why
the Lesser White-fronted Goose is an important species
for his country. He introduces important findings

Plan’s role is in his view.

Enough awareness and control of hunting!

Sergey Sklyarenko, Conservation and Science
Director of Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity
of Kazakhstan (ACBK), representative of the Committee
of Forestry and Hunting of the Ministry of Agriculture,
stresses the importance of his country as a stop-over
site for comparatively huge numbers of Lesser White-fronted
Geese on the Eurasian flyway. Strong hands-on collaboration
with NGOs and international organisations is important
to improve awareness and train identification skills
of hunters in Kazakhstan.

High time for developing real actions on the ground

International Conventions for the Directorate for
Nature Management of the Norwegian Ministry for the
Environment, sees the Action Plan agreement as a start
for proper field action along the flyways leading
across Russia and Kazakhstan as well as to South Eastern

Political push for more data collection and research

Dr.
Anna Belousova, Head of Department at the
All-Russian Research Institute for Nature Protection
of the Ministry for Natural Resources and Ecology
of the Russian Federation, sees the Action Plan as
a chance to obtain funding for intensified research
on LWfG in northern Russia to fill some of the remaining
knowledge gaps on the bird’s ecology.
