workshop was attended by 28 representatives
from the governments, NGOs and research
institutions of the five project countries
Algeria, Egypt, Mauritania, Morocco and
Tunisia as well as of Libya. In addition,
experts from BirdLife
International, UNEP/AEWA,
UNEP-WCMC,
Wetlands
International, the Spanish
BLI partner BirdLife/SEO,
the BirdLife
Africa Partnership Secretariat
and the French Office
National de la Chasse et de la Faune Sauvage

WetCap Project enables participation of
North African experts in WOW Training of
Trainers workshop |

Bonn,
3 December 2009 – Representatives
from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia participated
in a sub-regional Training of Trainers
(ToT) workshop aimed to build wetland
and waterbird management capacity and
help raise awareness for flyway conservation
in Western and Central Africa.
The workshop,
which took place in Limbe, Cameroon from
2-10 November 2009, was organized by the
Wetlands International office in Dakar
in collaboration with the Garoua Wildlife
School in Cameroon in the framework of
the Wings
Over Wetlands (WOW) Project
and with financial support from the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service. [read

The WetCap Steering Committee meets for
the first time |
|
Bonn,
25 August 2009 – The first
Steering Committee Meeting of the project
on “Strengthening waterbird and
wetland conservation capacities in North
Africa (WetCap)” took place in Bonn,
Germany at the UN Campus. The Steering
Committee Meeting provided a first-time
opportunity to assemble representatives
of the core partner organizations involved
in the technical and administrative delivery
of the project to discuss the work plan
for the first year of implementation.
The meeting
was attended by representatives of AEWA,
BirdLife International, the Spanish BirdLife
partner SEO and Wetlands International.
The role of the Steering Committee is
to guide and oversee the project’s
technical progress and performance. [read

The Regional Coordinator for the WetCap project has been appointed |

The
AEWA Secretariat is pleased to announce
that Mr. Sidi Imad Cherkaoui has entered
on duty as Regional Coordinator for the
3-year project on “Strengthening
waterbird and wetland conservation capacities
in North Africa (WetCap)” as of
15 June 2009.
The WetCap
project, which was developed under the
umbrella of AEWA, in cooperation with
its project partners SEO/BirdLife,
BirdLife
International, Wetlands
International and the Ramsar
Convention, is closely linked
to the ongoing Wings over Wetlands UNEP-GEF
African-Eurasian Flyway Project
WOW. Within the
framework of the WetCap project, capacity
building activities will be implemented
in Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt and

WATERBIRD CONSERVATION IN NORTH AFRICA GETS
A BOOST |

- A new 3-year project on “Strengthening
waterbird and wetland conservation capacities
in North Africa (WetCap)” is embarking
on its first year of implementation as
of this month. Within the framework of
this project capacity building activities
will take place in Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria,
Egypt and Mauritania.
The WetCap
project is linked to the ongoing UNEP-GEF
African-Eurasian Flyway Project, also
known as “Wings over Wetlands (WOW)”.
It will be implemented under the umbrella
of the UNEP Agreement on the Conservation
of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds
(AEWA), in cooperation with its project
partners BirdLife International, SEO/BirdLife
(Spanish BirdLife partner), Wetlands International
and the Ramsar Convention. [read
