A first step towards getting the African
Initiative off the ground was the creation of the post of
Coordinator for activities in Africa within the AEWA Secretariat.
The main tasks of the Coordinator are:
- To draft a Plan of Action for the conservation of migratory
waterbirds and their habitats in Africa, including a proposal
for priority areas to be submitted for adoption to the
5th Meeting of the Parties in 2012.
- To identify possible synergies and enhance the cooperation
with other relevant conventions and organisations with
regard to activities and projects in Africa (e.g. Convention
on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals,
Ramsar Convention, BirdLife International, Wetlands International).
Emphasis will be placed on fostering collaboration with
regional and subregional initiatives/ organisations (e.g.
Southern African Development Community (SADC), New Partnership
for Africa‘s Development (NEPAD), Fondation Internationale
du Banc d‘Arguin, Abidjan Convention, Nairobi Convention
and The African Union)
- To promote the Agreement’s Small Grants Fund
Programme in Africa; a scheme aiming to assist in the
implementation of the Agreement in developing countries
and countries with economies in transition.
- To provide advisory services to the African Parties
to AEWA.
- To encourage the accession of Non-Contracting Parties
to the Agreement.
